Laser Crystal Engraving or Etching Process - Sub-Surface Laser Engraving

First, the crystal used must be of the highest optical quality having virtually no internal distortions, stress lines or colorization.  We only use the highest quality optical grade crystal available.  If you have looked around much at Laser Crystal, you might be confused by the gamut of pricing - from $7.99 items on eBay to $1000 items in high end galleries.  The cost of the crystal product is affected by: 1) the size and grade of glass or optical crystal used, 2) the quality of the laser and its accuracy, 3) the number of engraved "points" or inclusions, 4) the uniqueness or originality of the digital artist's design and 5) the degree of personalization and customization as compared to mass production.

Obviously, the smaller, cheaper mass produced crystals seen on eBay or at some websites and some gift shops are made using low grade glass that will "yellow" often within a few months and lasers that produce fewer points with less accuracy.  If that is what you are looking for, great - but you won't find those type products here.  Visit some of the sites listed on our Links and Partners page to locate other sources of supply.

For 2D images or graphics, the image is processed using Adobe PhotoShop or Illustrator and adjusted for contrast and grayscale rendering.  It is then converted into a bitmap file sized to fit the crystal selected.  Captions are added as specified and the image can also be cropped and altered to enhance its presentation such as removal of backgrounds or making overlays and multi-image collages.

In order to create 3D engraved objects, the object can either be scanned forma  model using a special 3D scanner or created from scratch by graphic designers using software such as 3D Studio Max.  More commonly, objects designed with CAD software such as AutoCAD Mechanical Desktop, SolidWorks, ProEngineer and other 3D modeling software, can easily be imported into 3D Studio Max and altered to improve the rendering made through the laser process.  Many libraries of 3D material exists as locations such as www.3DCafe.com or www.turbosquid.com and others.  Many of the items in these libraries can also be used to make 3D laser crystals - find a unique 3D object and make your own unique laser etched crystal.

Once the artwork is designed and scaled to the size of the final crystal piece, it is processed through other 3D software to form a point-cloud of the 2D graphic or 3D model. Each point has coordinates which is used to make the final image in the crystal.

Once the artwork is done and the point-cloud is created, the final crystal product is ready to be made. The laser software plots the points in the final crystal piece. The laser then focuses a high-powered beam that focuses at each three dimensional coordinate. Once the beam reaches the focal point, the powerful laser pulse makes a tiny fracture or inclusion inside the crystal. Then the laser moves to the next coordinate and makes another etched point. This process creates a wonderfully unique way in which awe inspiring gifts and awards and be created such as the Viper crystal seen in the image on our home page and on our Custom Services page.  Some very talented digital artists are using their unique skills in mathematics and art to create a totally unique new form of digital art or 3D Crystal Laser Art. 

3D Face Scanning for Laser Crystals

For 3D Face Scanning or Portrait 3D Laser Crystals, like those available at many Las Vegas hotels and Orlando resorts, your physical presence is required to make a scan of your face using a special scanner and thus cannot be done over the internet by a web business such as ours.
