Like most people, I find that
Microsoft has always missed one fundamental need in the
Windows®
interface - an easy utility to customize and remember various screen
display settings, especially when multiple people use the same
computer, like with a family. Maybe one person has poor eyesight
or like me, never seems to be able to have their reading glasses at
hand. Do you have your resolution set low like 800x600 or worse,
640x480 so the text on your screen is legible? If you do, then
you are missing out on making the most effective use of that nice
monitor sitting in front of you as the world around us and the
internet is becoming more and more visual everyday as more people
connect with high speed services.
Microsoft
sure didn't make it easy for us to alter the screen appearance.
Set the resolution higher, and now the Icons and Text get really
small, right? There are ways in Windows to alter the Icon size,
Screen Font size, etc. but who has time to adjust all that or even
know how? If
you do have the time and want to go through the process, open your
Display Settings window from Control Panel or just right-click on
you desktop and select
Properties. You can then change the resolution on the
"Settings" tab. You may also want to change some of the Icon and
Font sizes. Microsoft doesn't make this easy but you can use the
"Appearance" tab and adjust the size of most items (if you
have Windows XP, click the Advanced button). You might also want
to click the "Advanced" button on the Settings tab and select "Large
Fonts".
Personally, this seems a lot of effort and Microsoft provides no easy
way to save your preferred settings. Eventually, something happens and
it gets reset, especially if you happen to play certain games on your
system.
Let me suggest some better solutions below to
improve your viewing experience with any software or web-site:
LiquidView from Portrait Displays
($29.95 - Free 30 day trial)
Liquid
View is a utility that lets you increase the legibility of the
Microsoft Windows® interface regardless of your display's native
resolution. The software lets you increase the size of items that are
hard to read on your monitor. Desktop icons and fonts, your desktop
toolbar, and Microsoft application toolbars can be resized with the
touch of a button. Reduce the eye strain caused by illegible text
items on your desktop and application interfaces. With Liquid View you
won't have to squint at your screen.
LiquidSurf from Portrait Displays
($19.95 - Free 30 day trial)
Liquid
Surf lets you customize the appearance of web content. The software
allows you to increase or decrease the size of text and graphics
within Internet Explorer 6.0 and organize windows for more efficient
ways of reading what's in your browser. With Liquid Surf's custom
toolbar you can resize web content to make browsing a more comfortable
experience.
